Michael Radford

British Cinema

Born in New Delhi in 1946 to a British father and an Austrian mother, Michael Radford studied in Britain and worked as a teacher abroad before becoming a documentary film-maker. His first films include Another Time, Another Place (1983) and 1984 (1984). Il Postino (1994), about a postman on a small Italian island who befriends the exiled poet Pablo Neruda, was a worldwide success and won him the BAFTA for director, though it is overshadowed by the death of its star Massimo Troisi just after filming. He also made The Merchant of Venice (2004).
