Born in Istanbul in 1959, Ceylan began as a photographer and became the leading Turkish director of his generation. His films use long takes, still compositions and the landscapes of Anatolia to explore loneliness, class and the distance between people, and are often compared to Chekhov and Tarkovsky. He won the Palme d'Or for Winter Sleep and has won prizes at Cannes for several other films.
