Born in Warsaw in 1957, Paweł Pawlikowski left Poland with his mother at fourteen and settled in Britain, studying at Oxford and making documentaries before features. Last Resort (2000) and My Summer of Love (2004) won BAFTAs. Ida (2013), shot in black and white about a young nun, won the Oscar for best international feature, the first Polish film to do so. Cold War (2018) won him the award for best director at Cannes and Oscar nominations for best director, foreign film and cinematography.
