Born in Dhaka in 1925 and died in Calcutta in 1976, Ritwik Ghatak was marked by the Partition of Bengal, which left millions of refugees and became the subject of much of his work. He worked in theatre and the Indian People's Theatre Association, and his films mix melodrama, myth, folk music and sharp social critique. He was little recognised in his lifetime, but his influence on Indian cinema is now acknowledged as equal to that of Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. He also taught at the Film and Television Institute of India.
