Born in Gothenburg in 1943, Roy Andersson made A Swedish Love Story (1970) and Giliap (1975) before he left feature film-making for commercials, and made more than 400 of them in his Stockholm studio. He returned to cinema with Songs from the Second Floor (2000), the first part of his 'Living Trilogy' on the human condition, followed by You, the Living (2007) and A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (2014), which won the Golden Lion at Venice. His films are made up of short, static, tableau-like scenes in pale, grey colours, built in a studio, mixing deadpan humour and tragedy. About Endlessness (2019) won the Silver Lion for best director.
