Born in Yao, Osaka, in 1960, to a seamstress and a welder, Takashi Miike studied at the Yokohama film school under Shohei Imamura and worked on television and direct-to-video 'V-Cinema' before Shinjuku Triad Society (1995) brought him attention. He has directed more than a hundred films and series, moving between yakuza violence, horror, samurai epics, comedy and family fantasy. Audition (1999) made his name abroad, and his later work includes Ichi the Killer, Gozu, Sukiyaki Western Django, 13 Assassins (2010) and Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011), which was in competition at Cannes.
