Tsai Ming-liang

Taiwan New Cinema

Born in Kuching, Malaysia, in 1957, Tsai Ming-liang moved to Taiwan as a young man and became a leading voice of the island's second wave of new cinema. His films are made of very long takes, few words, and recurring settings and characters, centred on the actor Lee Kang-sheng. Themes of loneliness, desire and urban alienation run through Vive L'Amour (1994), which won the Golden Lion at Venice, The Hole, What Time Is It There? and Goodbye, Dragon Inn. His work is often shown in museums as well as cinemas.
