Born in Vilusi, Montenegro, in 1928 and dying in Zagreb in 2015, Veljko Bulajić made the partisan epics of Yugoslav cinema, with state support. His war film Kozara (1962) was a big success. The Battle of Neretva (1969), the biggest Yugoslav production of its time, with Yul Brynner, Orson Welles and Franco Nero, was a partisan epic of the 1943 battle against German and Italian forces, and was nominated for the Oscar for foreign language film. It was supported personally by Tito.
