Plot

In 1943, Tito's partisans fight their way across the Neretva river in Bosnia to escape from encirclement by Axis forces, in the face of the German-led offensive known as Case White. The film shows the cost of the campaign on a large scale, with a huge international cast. Veljko Bulajić's 1969 epic, with Yul Brynner, Orson Welles and Franco Nero, was the most expensive Yugoslav film of its time and was nominated for an Oscar.

Sinekatalog’s take

Veljko Bulajić's Yugoslav war epic recreates Tito's partisans crossing the Neretva in 1943, with Yul Brynner and Orson Welles. Vast and explosive, with real bridge demolitions, it is a monumental, propagandistic spectacle.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
