Plot

A man takes a job as a janitor in a mental asylum so that he can be near his wife, who is a patient there and has been driven mad by the loss of her child. Through distorted images, the film moves between the world of the patients and the thoughts of the man, who dreams of freeing her. Teinosuke Kinugasa's 1926 Japanese film was thought lost for decades until the director found a print in his storehouse in 1971. It has no intertitles and uses rapid editing and superimpositions in the manner of European avant-garde cinema.

Sinekatalog’s take

Teinosuke Kinugasa's silent avant-garde film follows a man working in an asylum to be near his wife. Fragmented, hallucinatory and intense, with no intertitles, it is a striking, rediscovered classic of Japanese cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
