Plot

On 6 May 1938, the day Hitler visits Rome, the city is emptied as everyone goes to the parade. In a large apartment block, a downtrodden housewife, Antonietta, mother of six, meets a neighbour, Gabriele, a radio announcer who has been dismissed for being homosexual and anti-fascist. They spend the day together and form a brief, intimate bond. Ettore Scola's 1977 film, with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni, is subtle and moving.

Sinekatalog’s take

Ettore Scola's chamber drama has Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni as neighbours meeting on the day of Hitler's Rome visit. Tender and sad, with two great performances, it is a moving study of loneliness under fascism.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
