Plot
In 1938, Marcello Clerici, a man who desperately wants to be normal, joins the Italian fascist secret police and is sent to Paris to assassinate his former professor, an anti-fascist exile. He travels with his new bourgeois wife on their honeymoon and befriends the professor's wife. Bernardo Bertolucci's 1970 film, with Jean-Louis Trintignant and Vittorio Storaro's cinematography, is a dazzling study of conformity, repression and guilt.
Sinekatalog’s take
Bertolucci follows a man who joins Mussolini's secret police to feel normal. Stylish and decadent, with Vittorio Storaro's photography, it examines how conformity becomes complicity.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
