Plot

In 1905 the sailors of the Russian battleship Potemkin are served meat crawling with maggots. When their officers threaten to execute the protesters, the crew mutinies, and a sailor named Vakulinchuk is killed in the fight. His body becomes a rallying point for the people of Odessa, who gather on the harbour steps. Soldiers open fire on the crowd in the celebrated Odessa Steps sequence. Eisenstein's 1925 film made the argument for montage, building meaning from the collision of shots, and it was both a revolutionary celebration and a landmark of film technique.

Sinekatalog’s take

Eisenstein's silent Soviet propaganda classic centres on the Odessa Steps massacre. The editing theory behind it, montage as collision, shaped film language, and the baby-carriage shot is still referenced.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
