Plot

The film follows the life of the Baroque painter Caravaggio, from his early days in Rome to his death, through flashbacks as he lies dying. His models, lovers and patrons, among them the street thug Ranuccio and the model Lena, appear in tableaux that recreate his paintings. Derek Jarman's 1986 film, made with a tiny budget, mixes period setting with deliberate anachronisms and is a visually rich study of art and desire.

Sinekatalog’s take

Derek Jarman's lush, anachronistic biopic follows the painter's life and loves in flashback. Sensual and painterly, with Nigel Terry and Tilda Swinton in her debut, it is a bold, striking, deliberately artificial portrait.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
