Plot

Detective Finlay investigates the murder of a man in a hotel room, which seems to involve a group of soldiers who were drinking with the victim the night before. As he follows the clues he finds that the murder was a crime of hatred, committed because the victim was Jewish. Edward Dmytryk's 1947 film noir, with Robert Young, Robert Mitchum and Robert Ryan, was one of the first Hollywood films to deal with antisemitism, and received five Oscar nominations.

Sinekatalog’s take

Edward Dmytryk's noir turns a murder mystery into an indictment of antisemitism. Robert Ryan is chilling and the film's shadowy style and bold theme made it a landmark of socially conscious noir.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
