Directed by Lev Kuleshov

Cast

Aleksandra Khokhlova Sergei Komarov Vladimir Fogel

Plot

Based on a story by Jack London, three men prospecting in the Yukon strike gold, but one of them, Dennin, murders a partner to take the whole find. The couple who remain, Hans Nelson and his wife Edith, capture the killer and, snowed in with him in their isolated cabin, decide to carry out the law themselves, holding a trial and sentencing him to hang. Lev Kuleshov's 1926 chamber film was shot almost entirely on one set, using close-ups and tight acting to build tension, and it shows the theories of acting and editing that he was developing.

Sinekatalog’s take

Lev Kuleshov's silent drama, after Jack London, has a prospector murder a partner for gold and be put on trial by the survivors in the snowy Yukon. Austere and gripping, with a cast of a few, it is a model of Kuleshov's rigorous staging and editing.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
