Plot

A merchant's son returns to his village in Rajasthan with his new bride. When he leaves on business, a ghost falls in love with the woman and takes the form of her husband. The young woman must decide between the human husband and the lover. Mani Kaul's 1973 film, based on a folk tale, uses stylised compositions and a slow pace, and is a landmark of the Indian parallel cinema.

Sinekatalog’s take

Mani Kaul's folk fable has a ghost take the shape of a merchant's absent son to love his new bride in Rajasthan. Stylised, painterly and still, it is a strange, beautiful and rigorous work of Indian art cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
