Born in Jodhpur in 1944 and dying near Delhi in 2011, Mani Kaul studied at the Film and Television Institute in Pune under Ritwik Ghatak. His first feature Uski Roti (1969) is one of the key films of the Indian New Wave. He worked in an austere, formal manner indebted to Bresson, making Ashadh Ka Ek Din (1971), Duvidha (1973), Satah Se Uthata Admi (1980), Dhrupad (1982) and Idiot (1992), as well as documentaries. Duvidha won him the National Award for best direction and Siddheshwari the award for best documentary.
