Plot
After Italy's armistice with the Allies on 8 September 1943, an Italian lieutenant, Innocenzi, and his men are left without orders as German troops start turning on their former allies. They set off for home on foot, and the lieutenant's idealism meets the chaos around them. Luigi Comencini's 1960 film, with Alberto Sordi, mixes comedy with tragedy and is a classic of Italian war cinema.
Sinekatalog’s take
Luigi Comencini's war comedy-drama follows an Italian lieutenant and his men walking home after the September 1943 armistice. Alberto Sordi is superb in a funny, humane, bitter portrait of a collapsing army and a country in confusion.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
