Plot

Marshal Will Kane has just married and retired when he hears that Frank Miller, a killer he sent to prison, is arriving on the noon train to take revenge. He asks the townspeople for help but one by one they refuse, and his wife, a Quaker, pleads with him to leave. The film plays out in real time as he waits alone for the clock to strike twelve. Fred Zinnemann's 1952 Western, with Gary Cooper, is often read as a parable of the Hollywood blacklist.

Sinekatalog’s take

A marshal faces a killer alone as the town turns away. Zinnemann's western plays out nearly in real time with a ticking clock, and its tension rests on one man's conscience.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
