Fred Zinnemann

Classical Hollywood

Born in Rzeszów, then in Austria-Hungary, in 1907 and died in London in 1997, Fred Zinnemann studied law in Vienna and worked as a cameraman in Paris and Berlin before going to Hollywood. Many of his family died in the Holocaust. His films deal with individuals under moral pressure, such as High Noon (1952) and From Here to Eternity (1953), the latter winning the Oscar for directing. He won again for A Man for All Seasons (1966), and made The Nun's Story and the thriller The Day of the Jackal. He was a careful craftsman with a feeling for dramatic realism.
