Plot
In a decaying Hungarian collective farm, the villagers hear that Irimiás, a man they believed dead, is returning, and they hope that he will save them, as they plan to flee with the communal money. Béla Tarr's 1994 film, which lasts more than seven hours and is made up of long, slow takes in black and white, is a hypnotic, bleak portrait of hope and deception, based on László Krasznahorkai's novel.
Sinekatalog’s take
Béla Tarr's seven-hour black-and-white epic of a collapsing Hungarian farm is hypnotic and bleak. Its long takes, mud and rain demand patience, rewarding it with one of cinema's most overwhelming experiences.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
