Sinekatalog’s take

Chen Kaige's drama follows a young man in 1910s Shanghai drawn to a seductive opium-den heiress, played by Gong Li. Lush and beautiful, with Leslie Cheung, it is a sumptuous but sometimes ponderous period melodrama.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
