Plot

After the war, Ernesto returns to Turin to find his house destroyed and his family gone. He learns that his sister has been forced into prostitution, and when he tries to find her he kills a man and flees, falling in with a gang of criminals led by a woman named Lidia. Alberto Lattuada's 1946 film, among the first Italian features made after the end of the war, mixes crime melodrama with a documentary-like picture of a broken country, and stars Amedeo Nazzari and Anna Magnani.

Sinekatalog’s take

Alberto Lattuada's drama follows a returning soldier who finds his home destroyed and his sister forced into prostitution, and falls into crime. Amedeo Nazzari and Anna Magnani are strong in a gritty, melodramatic postwar film.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
