Plot

John Sims, a young man who has been told since childhood that he is destined for greatness, comes to New York and finds himself one anonymous clerk among thousands in a giant office. He marries, has children, and struggles with money and a death in the family, and his dreams are slowly ground away by the city. King Vidor's 1928 silent film, with its famous shot of rows of identical desks, was an early and uncompromising portrait of urban life, and was a critical rather than commercial success.

Sinekatalog’s take

King Vidor's silent drama of an ordinary man swallowed by New York is moving and visually bold. Its famous office shot and honest portrait of dreams versus reality make it a powerful, humane classic.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
