Classical Hollywood

Born in Galveston, Texas, in 1894 and died in 1982, King Vidor was a director whose career stretched from the silent era into the 1960s. His great silent films were The Big Parade (1925), a realist First World War drama, and The Crowd (1928), the story of an ordinary man swallowed by a big city. He made one of the first sound films with an all-Black cast, Hallelujah (1929). He treated social subjects, the Depression and individual striving, in works such as Our Daily Bread, and was also behind the melodramas Stella Dallas and The Fountainhead.
