Plot

In 1943, in Italy, a group of Allied soldiers and Jewish refugees from different countries try to cross the Alps into Switzerland, helped by a Swiss priest and a peasant farmer. Distrust, language barriers and the threat of capture mark their journey over the mountain. Leopold Lindtberg's 1945 Swiss film used real refugees and soldiers in its cast, and its plea for tolerance was widely seen as a landmark. It won the Grand Prize at Cannes and an Academy Award for its story.
