Plot

After the Civil War, Ethan Edwards, a bitter veteran, returns to his brother's Texas ranch. When Comanche raiders kill the family and take his young nieces, he sets out with Martin Pawley, a part-Cherokee young man raised by the family, to find them. Their search lasts years across the American West. John Ford's 1956 Western, shot in Monument Valley, with John Wayne in one of his greatest roles, is a study of obsession and racism in the pioneer story, and its closing shot of a door has been widely imitated.

Sinekatalog’s take

John Ford's western follows a bitter Civil War veteran, played by John Wayne, searching for his abducted niece. A complex, troubling hero and stunning Monument Valley images make it one of the genre's best.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
