Plot

Lois Weber's 1916 film follows a district attorney, Richard Walton, who prosecutes a doctor for giving out birth-control information to the poor. At home, he and his wife are childless, and the film reveals that she has been secretly avoiding motherhood, even though he longs for children. The story, which argues about abortion, birth control and eugenics, was a commercial success and caused controversy and censorship. It is one of the early feature films directed by a woman and is preserved in the National Film Registry.

Sinekatalog’s take

Lois Weber's 1916 drama follows a district attorney who prosecutes a doctor for giving out birth-control information while his own wife secretly avoids motherhood. Bold and didactic, it is a fascinating, controversial slice of early American cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
