Plot
In a village in Hubei province, Xiangxiang, a powerful woman who runs a sesame oil business, buys a young bride for her disabled son. The bride comes to the village unwillingly, and the relationships between the women, the business and the community develop over time. Xie Fei's 1993 film, with Siqin Gaowa, who won the Best Actress prize in Berlin, shared the Golden Bear that year. It is a quiet study of tradition and women's strength.
Sinekatalog’s take
Xie Fei's drama follows a powerful sesame-oil businesswoman in Hubei who buys a young bride for her disabled son. Siqin Gaowa is formidable in a fine, bitter study of women in a hard rural economy.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
