Algeria

Algerian cinema was born in the war of independence and the state-supported 1960s and 70s. Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina's Chronicle of the Years of Fire won the Palme d'Or in 1975, still the only African film to do so. Later filmmakers such as Merzak Allouache looked at urban life and the civil conflict of the 1990s with humour and realism.
