Born in Viborg, Denmark, in 1879 and died in 1959, Christensen was an actor and opera singer before turning director. His haunting Swedish-Danish production Häxan, which took years to make, mixes documentary-style lecture with dramatised scenes of witchcraft. He later worked in Germany and Hollywood, making horror and mystery films.
