Born in Croydon in 1908 and died in 1991, Lean began as a film editor and became Britain's great maker of epics. He moved from intimate dramas such as Brief Encounter and Dickens adaptations to the large-scale spectacles of his later career, and won the Oscar for Best Director for The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia.
