Born in Naples in 1922 and died in Rome in 2015, Francesco Rosi worked as an assistant to Visconti before directing his own films. He built a form of investigative cinema in which a story is reconstructed from documents, witnesses and contradictory accounts, probing the links between power, crime and politics in Italy. Salvatore Giuliano (1962) became a model for political filmmaking. The Mattei Affair (1972) won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, shared with The Working Class Goes to Heaven.
