Guy Maddin

Canadian Cinema

Born in Winnipeg in 1956, Guy Maddin studied economics before making films that draw on the style of silent cinema, with deliberately damaged-looking film stock, melodrama and dream. His films include Tales from the Gimli Hospital (1988), Archangel (1990), Careful (1992), The Saddest Music in the World (2003), Brand Upon the Brain! (2006) and the 'docufantasia' My Winnipeg (2008), which was named best Canadian film at the Toronto festival. He co-directed The Forbidden Room (2015) with Evan Johnson and made The Green Fog (2017) from archival footage of San Francisco.
