Lynne Ramsay

British Cinema

Born in Glasgow in 1969, Lynne Ramsay studied photography and then film, and won prizes with her short films, including Small Deaths and Gasman. Ratcatcher (1999) was a debut of lyrical realism set in a Glasgow estate during a refuse strike. Her films often rely on image and sound rather than dialogue and take a subjective, intimate view of troubled characters. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011), with Tilda Swinton, and You Were Never Really Here (2017), with Joaquin Phoenix, won her wide praise.
