Marco Bellocchio

Italian Neorealism and After

Born in Bobbio in 1939, Marco Bellocchio is one of the major figures of Italian cinema after the neorealists. His debut Fists in the Pocket (1965) was a ferocious attack on the bourgeois family and the Church, and he was associated with the political ferment of 1968. His later work moved between psychoanalysis, history and politics, with Good Morning, Night (2003) about the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, and Vincere (2009) about Mussolini's hidden first family. The Traitor (2019) told the story of the mafia informer Tommaso Buscetta.
