Miloš Forman

New Hollywood

Born in Čáslav in 1932 and died in Connecticut in 2018, Miloš Forman lost his parents in Nazi camps and studied at the Prague film school FAMU. He was a leading figure of the Czechoslovak New Wave, with gentle satires such as Loves of a Blonde (1965) and The Fireman's Ball (1967), whose portrait of petty officials was seen as an attack on the Communist regime. After the Soviet invasion in 1968 he moved to the United States and won Oscars for best director for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and Amadeus (1984), both of which also won best picture.
