Czech Republic / Czechoslovakia

Czechoslovak cinema produced the 1960s Czech New Wave, in which Miloš Forman, Jiří Menzel and others combined humour, empathy and quiet political edge. The Soviet-led invasion of 1968 ended the wave and sent several directors abroad, including Forman to Hollywood. The tradition continued in animation and puppetry, and in the Czech and Slovak industries after 1993. Czech film is known for its fantasy and surrealism, especially in animation and puppetry. Jan Švankmajer, an uncompromising surrealist, has built a strange, tactile body of work from stop-motion, objects and dream logic, drawing on a long local tradition of puppets, Prague's gothic atmosphere and a darkly comic spirit.
