Raoul Walsh

Classical Hollywood

Born in New York in 1887 and died in 1980, Raoul Walsh began as an actor (he played John Wilkes Booth in Griffith's The Birth of a Nation) and was one of the great action directors of Hollywood. He directed hundreds of films, from the lavish The Thief of Bagdad (1924) to the Warner Bros. gangster and war films of the 1940s, with Cagney, Bogart and Errol Flynn. High Sierra (1941) made Bogart a star, and White Heat (1949) is among the best gangster films. His style is fast, direct and unadorned.
