Born in Liverpool in 1945 and died in 2023, Terence Davies grew up in a working-class Catholic family, the youngest of ten children, and drew on this for his most personal work. His first films, collected as The Terence Davies Trilogy, and Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988) and The Long Day Closes (1992) are memory films of fragments, songs, light and movement. He later made adaptations such as The House of Mirth and The Deep Blue Sea, and the Emily Dickinson drama A Quiet Passion.
