Plot

On the island of Lampedusa, a twelve-year-old boy, Samuele, lives his everyday life, hunting with a slingshot and visiting a doctor for his lazy eye, while thousands of migrants arrive by sea, and are rescued by the coast guard. Gianfranco Rosi's 2016 documentary, which won the Golden Bear in Berlin, places the two worlds side by side without commentary.

Sinekatalog’s take

Gianfranco Rosi's Golden Bear winner juxtaposes a young Lampedusa boy's life with migrant rescues at sea. Quiet, observational and devastating, it lets the contrast speak without commentary.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
