Plot

In Rome during the Nazi occupation of 1943–44, Giorgio Manfredi, a leader of the resistance, is hunted by the Gestapo. He finds refuge with Pina, a pregnant woman, and with a priest, Don Pietro, who works with the partisans. Betrayal and torture follow, and the lives of the ordinary people involved are broken. Roberto Rossellini made the film in 1945 only months after the liberation, using real locations and few resources, and its raw immediacy made it the founding work of Italian neorealism. Anna Magnani's performance as Pina is remembered above all.

Sinekatalog’s take

Rossellini's neorealist drama about the Resistance in occupied Rome was shot among real ruins soon after the war. Raw and urgent, it influenced film worldwide and has some indelible scenes.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
