Plot

In Hungary after the failed 1848 uprising against Austrian rule, the authorities round up peasants and suspected rebels on the plains and hold them in a remote prison camp. Using informers, psychological pressure and shifting loyalties, they hunt for the outlaw leader Sándor Rózsa's men. Miklós Jancsó's 1965 film is shot in long, elaborate takes across an open landscape, and is a cold study of power and betrayal that premiered at Cannes.

Sinekatalog’s take

Miklós Jancsó's long-take masterpiece shows Austrian authorities breaking Hungarian rebels in a remote plains prison. Cold, geometric and chilling, it is a landmark study of power, betrayal and psychological control.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
