Plot

In nineteenth-century Värmland, in Sweden, a defrocked priest, Gösta Berling, is taken in at the manor of Ekeby with the other cavaliers, who spend their days in drink, music and romance. He falls in love with several women, including the young countess Elisabeth and a rich heiress, and brings both joy and misery to the people around him. Mauritz Stiller's 1924 adaptation of Selma Lagerlöf's novel made a star of the young Greta Garbo in her first major role and brought her to Hollywood.

Sinekatalog’s take

Mauritz Stiller's silent epic follows a defrocked priest among reckless cavaliers in 19th-century Värmland, with a young Greta Garbo in her breakout. Romantic and sweeping, it is a lavish, theatrical piece of Swedish silent cinema.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
