Born in Raudnitz, Bohemia, in 1885 and died in Vienna in 1967, Georg Wilhelm Pabst was a leading figure of the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), the realist, socially critical trend that followed German Expressionism. The Joyless Street (1925) showed hunger in inflation-ruined Vienna and gave Greta Garbo her first major role. With Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl (both 1929) he made a star of Louise Brooks. He also made the pacifist Westfront 1918 and Kameradschaft. His career in the Nazi era was compromised, and he made films in Germany during the war.
