Mikio Naruse

Japanese Golden Age

Born in Tokyo in 1905 and died in 1969, Naruse made quiet, melancholy films about women, money and the disappointments of everyday life in Japan. He was less known abroad than Ozu, Mizoguchi and Kurosawa, but is now regarded as one of the great directors of the golden age.
