Born in Faridpur, then in British India and now in Bangladesh, in 1923 and died in Kolkata in 2018, Mrinal Sen was with Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak one of the three leading Bengali directors. A Marxist influenced by Italian neorealism and by the French New Wave, he used form to attack social injustice. Bhuvan Shome (1969), a gentle comedy about a stern civil servant, started the Indian New Cinema movement. Calcutta 71 and his other political films of the 1970s explore poverty and unrest in the city, while Kharij (1982) won the Jury Prize at Cannes.
