Born in Chicago in 1903 and died in 1986, Vincente Minnelli began as a window dresser and designer for Broadway before joining MGM's musical unit under Arthur Freed. He directed the studio's richest musicals, notably Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951) and Gigi (1958), which won nine Oscars, and brought a painter's eye for colour and design. He also made melodramas, including The Bad and the Beautiful and Lust for Life. He was married to Judy Garland and was the father of Liza Minnelli.
