Plot
Cary Scott, a prosperous widow in a New England town, falls in love with her gardener Ron Kirby, a younger man who lives simply among nature. Her grown children and her friends are shocked and pressure her to give him up, and she is trapped between her heart and the opinion of her community. Douglas Sirk's 1955 melodrama, with Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson, in glowing Technicolor, was a hit in its day and later became a model for filmmakers such as Fassbinder, Todd Haynes and Pedro Almodóvar.
Sinekatalog’s take
Douglas Sirk's Technicolor melodrama of a widow and her gardener is gorgeous and subversive. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson are touching, and its quiet attack on conformity influenced Fassbinder and Haynes.Sinekatalog’s own editorial review – not a user or critic quote.
